Well I tried scratching it with my nails and it is too hard to do that so it must be zinc. (I knew it wasn't soldering like it was lead.) Now what exactly do you mean by "Scrape it to shiny"? Do I have to use a different solder for it?

We bought the door at a stained glass place that was going out of business. We have had it for about 18 years trying to figure out what to do with it. For many years it was just proped up in our bedroom as decoration because I was afraid to fix it and cut it down to use as our front door. We recently had an addition put on our house and it will be the entrance door to my husbands new media room in the part of the basement that has been added on.

I can take a picture of it and post it if you would like to see the door.
