would anyone have comments on the difference/advantages/disadvantages of Gel Flux vs. liquid flux?
I generally use the Glastar Glasflux, but had Classic100 on hand. there was less sputtering from the gel, but it seems it took longer to solder; i had to go slower to get an even seamless bead....Just wondering if any one had any thoughts on it.
thanks
I think you've already answered some of your own questions. I like Glastar Gel Flux and the Classic gel for regular foiled work. A Gel flux will stay "put" and not dry out as fast. However, it's not very strong...which is why you're having trouble with soldering. It's also totally not strong enough for metal soldering. I always preferred the "Solder Mate 11" for heavy duty work and for zinc or brass. If you want a Flux with very little fuming you have to pay the price in diminished strength. Play around with the Glasflux and the Classic gel...decide if they work for you on a "good day".
STAY away from the cheap liquid Fluxes like "Ruby Flux". The fumes will EAT your sinus cavities.
