My husband built a 4'x8' work bench for me using 3/4" plywood on the top, wood posts (3x3 or 4x4, I can't remember) - with a shelf on the bottom (about 6" off the floor). I store lead & supplies on the shelf & as I am vertically challenged, I use the shelf to step up & over my project when I need to get to the middle of the table.
When I built a window 55"x48", we had to add a hinged panel on the side to accommodate the window. For that, he used a piano hinge & then sliding wood braces. It worked great. It is down & dirty but very functional. I do not hammer my homosote on the table -- I leave a 4x8 sheet (cut in 2) on top & rotate them around based on the project. If I am flipping a window, having a sheet move is very useful. I'd be happy to snap some pictures & post them somewhere if you would like.
