My table is 4-feet by 8-feet. The hinged part is across the 4-feet wide end and goes to the floor, so it is about 3-feet deep. I think that should be enough for a 4 by 4 piece. You would only have a foot unsupported when you let it down. My dh put hinged legs on it so they could hold it up while I slide a panel onto it. He made them fancy with springs to hold them to the section when it is down and the springs hook to the table to hold the legs up when it is up. Don't tell him, but I don't use the springs. The legs stay up good enough since it doesn't take long to slide the panel on or off. And I just sort of stick them under the table when I let the section down.
